Train2Target –
An integrated multidisciplinary approach towards a new generatIon
of antibiotics: Targeting function and cross-talk of bacterial envelope
protein machineries
Job Summary:
Train2Target is a multidisciplinary European Training Network funded by the European Commission
under the Horizon 2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action (no. 721484). Eleven research groups from
academia and private sector have come together to address the challenge of the discovery of
innovative antimicrobials through the recruitment of 15 early stage researchers (ESR) motivated to
address this ambitious challenge. The focus of Train2Target will be the bacterial cell envelope, one of
the most complex and sophisticated cellular structures and an excellent target for antibacterial
discovery. In this context, Naicons Srl is one of the industrial partners in Train2Target and has one
open position available for an ESR (PhD student). The ESR will be offered an interdisciplinary
education programme that includes a PhD trajectory with training-through-research in individual
projects, secondments at research groups of other network partners, and a variety of local and
network-wide courses and workshops.
Position available at Naicons
An Early-Stage Researcher (ESR) will be recruited as a PhD candidate to perform research in
antibacterial drug discovery. The aim of the project is the identification and characterization of novel
microbial metabolites with antibiotic activity. The project will involve identification of new compounds
exploiting Naicons’ large collection of actinomycetes strains. Characterization of active extracts will
lead to the isolation of the bioactive compounds and to their structural elucidation. Novel compounds
will be further characterized for their in vitro antimicrobial spectrum and other properties.
The selected candidate will be employed with a three-year contract by Naicons, where he/she will
perform most of the research work. He/she is expected to perform part of the research work at the
planned secondment institutions and to register for a PhD programme at the University of Amsterdam, NL. Planned secondments are at University of Amsterdam, NL, for approximately four months; and at the University of Newcastle, UK, for approximately four months.
Eligibility criteria: Master degree (M.Sc. or equivalent graduation). Applicants must not have been
awarded a PhD degree and must be in the first four years (full-time equivalent) of their research
careers prior to the recruitment. They must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work,
studies, etc.) in Italy for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the recruitment.
Additional requirements: Degree in chemical or biological sciences with a strong interest in chemistry and/or biochemistry. Previous research experience with antibiotics, actinomycetes and/or natural products will be a plus. The communication and teaching language throughout Train2Target is English, so proof of English proficiency is required.
Benefits: Salary and additional benefits are according to EU-standards for Marie Curie ESRs. (najlepsze z dostępnych!)
Additional benefits are foreseen for mobility and family allowance (if applicable).
Employment contract according to Italy labour laws.
Application: To apply, please send the following documents: to info@naicons.com
1. Personal statement/motivation letter (up to 2 pages) about applicants’ experience and interests
2. A complete CV (personal details, academic/education history, research experience, experimental
skills, publications etc.)
3. Proficiency of English language skills corresponding to at least level B2 on the Common European
Framework of Reference for Languages
4. Official list of grades obtained during the applicant’s bachelor and master studies
5. Names and contact information of at least two qualified references
Application deadline: 31 January 2017
